Meet Our Founder

Ashley M. W. Unadkat, LCAT, LMHC, BC-DMT, CMA

I’m Ashley—a neurodivergent creative polymath, therapist, movement analyst, dancer/choreographer, visual artist and founder of Movement and Mind. I notice patterns: in movement, relationships, organizations, and the systems shaping our lives. My work brings those perspectives together to help people understand what’s happening, reconnect with themselves, and imagine practical ways to move forward.

I work with individuals, creatives, small businesses, and organizations. Through mentorship, consulting, movement, creative collaboration, and conflict support, I help people navigate transitions, develop ideas, understand recurring difficulties, and bring their ways of living and working into closer relationship with their values. Sometimes we focus on a personal question and other times on how a team communicates or how a business takes shape. I move between the details and the wider picture, attending to how each influences the other.

I’ve had an entrepreneurial mind for as long as I can remember. On car rides through unfamiliar places as a child, I would study the businesses we passed, wondering what happened inside and what stories the people behind them carried. That curiosity remains: what people hope to create, the stories their work carries, and what helps an idea become something tangible. I’ve created many of the jobs I’ve held, often making room for work that didn’t have an obvious home.

My understanding of my own mind has grown over time. I was identified as dyslexic in early childhood, but it wasn’t until adulthood that I was diagnosed as Autistic and ADHD (AuDHD). This is what finally helped me realize that much of what I had internalized about myself and how I moved through the world was based mainly on the expectations of others. As a special education student, the resource room offered a reprieve—a place where I could think, learn, and ask questions more authentically. That experience informs my respect for different ways of learning and my attention to environments that support or restrict our gifts.

My background spans psychotherapy, dance/movement therapy, expressive arts, and movement analysis. As an embodied witness, I attend to what people communicate through movement, expression, relationship, and words. Creative problem-solving is central to my approach, alongside helping people reconnect with parts of themselves crowded out by survival, expectations, or the effort to keep up.

Veganism is an expression of my care for non-human animals and my concern with interconnected systems of injustice. For 15 years it has asked me to not turn away from the light it shines on how ordinary choices participate in larger structures. It has helped me recognize both the power of our actions and the conditions that shape our shared eco-system. This relationship between personal action and collective change is something I weave through every aspect of my work.

Through Movement and Mind, I practice stewarding by tending ideas, supporting people, and working together to create conditions for meaningful change. Our clinical practice branch, Movement for the Mind, provides psychotherapy separately. Across these pieces, my vision is for more authentic lives, more cooperative relationships, and ways of working that put care and shared responsibility into practice.
